ANALYSIS/OPINION:

Just in time for spring — even though, with the snow this week, it’s somewhat delayed — Longhorn Steakhouse is unveiling some new menu items at its various locations around the DMV. Get ready for limited-time offerings such as the 14 oz. Delmonico steak, as well as Grilled Lamb Chops, Seasoned Steakhouse Wings and Strawberries & Cream Shortcake.

At the Largo, Maryland, location, managing partner Keya Barnes took me through a little food tour of Longhorn’s offerings both new and classic. Keya started me off with the Wild West Shrimp served in garlic butter and served with spice cherry peppers, which is tasty even if it could have used a bit more spicy zest — to my palate anyway. Next up on the appetizer offerings were the wings, whose homemade hot sauce combines with the perfectly prepped chicken for an amazing taste.

The Delmonico came out from the kitchen looking glorious. It’s tasty and pleasing, though in retrospect, I probably should have asked for it medium rare as the “medium” preparation lost just a little bit too much of the meat to charring. No matter. The Delmonico is served alongside a stuffed potato topped high with sour cream and chives.

Keya absolutely refuses to let me leave anywhere even close to hungry, and so out came dessert offerings like the aforementioned Strawberry & Cream Shortcake and a Chocolate Lava Cake. It was a tough call since I naturally gravitate to chocolate, and the Lava Cake, piled high with vanilla ice cream, certainly does not disappoint.

But I must say the strawberry confection is amazingly refreshing without being too overly sweet — rather suitable and satisfying for the early part of spring.

So while it may still be chilly outside, you can warm up your soul with Longhorn’s new offerings.
