NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Newport News police say they have identified the body of a man found inside a submerged car in a local marina earlier this week.

Police spokesman Jamie Bastas says the man was identified as 76-year-old Aaron Joseph of Yale, Virginia.

Officials say there were no signs of trauma when the body was removed from the car. The cause of death hasn’t been determined.

Multiple news outlets reported a retired police officer spotted a red Toyota Prius in the Deep Creek Marina on Tuesday. Joseph’s body was later found in the backseat of the car.

Officials say they are conducting toxicology reports.

It is unclear how long the car had been in the water or how it got there.
