It was interesting to read that former President Obama is vacationing in Tahiti (“Obama in Paradise: He’s in Tahiti for a month,” Web, March 16). This son of a World War II Pacific veteran (my late father was at the Battle of Midway) would suggest to Mr. Obama that he expand his travels to Guadalcanal, Saipan, Iwo Jima, the Coral Sea, Midway and Pearl Harbor so that he might appreciate the sacrifices made by the “Greatest Generation.”

Mr. Obama might also visit Singapore, so as to appreciate Gen. Perciville, the British general who was imprisoned when Fortress Singapore surrendered. As the nephew of a Purple Heart veteran of World War II, I would suggest that Mr. Obama make a pilgrimage to Normandy, Bastogne and other World War II battlefield sites. He might then understand the consternation of many Britons and Americans when he had the bust of Winston Churchill, the man whose eloquence saved western civilization, removed from the Oval Office.

Should Mr. Obama pay heed to the advice of this proud descendant of the aforementioned heroes of World War II, I would hope that he would also not take “selfies.” That would be the ultimate insult to those who gave so much for our freedom.
