EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for abusing a 3-year-old boy.

The Register-Guard reports (https://is.gd/RUSsHj) 46-year-old Mechele Ann Robinson of Springfield received the sentence Wednesday after pleading guilty to coercion and criminal mistreatment.

Prosecutor Stephen Morgan said Robinson began caring for the boy she’s not related to last summer, after the child’s mother was sentenced to prison in a drug case.

The investigation began when a friend of the victim’s family went to Robinson’s home and found the child sleeping inside a garbage bag that had been tied around his neck. The boy had bruises on his penis and buttocks.

Robinson apologized in court. She previously spent time in prison on a robbery conviction.

Morgan said the boy is living with a relative and doing well.
