NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities in New Jersey say a man charged with attacking and killing a man who was walking his dog is now in custody.

Earl Allayne Jr., of Sayreville, surrendered to police Saturday in Old Bridge after fleeing from them and briefly hiding in an apartment building’s utility room.

Authorities say he attacked 51-year-old Viktor Yashchyshyk around 9 p.m. Wednesday while the older man was walking his dog near his home in Old Bridge. They said Yashchyshyk was talking on his cellphone when he was attacked.

Yashchyshyk was knocked unconscious and suffered a skull fracture and broken jaw. He died at a hospital Friday morning.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey says the 20-year-old Allayne faces felony murder and robbery charges. It wasn’t immediately known if Allayne is represented by a lawyer.
