NEW YORK (AP) - An award-winning author of books on the U.S. Navy during World War II will be among the guest speakers at a Memorial Day event at New York City’s Soldiers and Sailors Monument.

The event is scheduled to begin 10 a.m. Monday in Manhattan’s Riverside Park at the 115-year-old memorial to the New Yorkers who served in the Union army and navy during the Civil War.

Guest speakers include U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Kent Whalen and James Hornfischer, a naval historian from Austin, Texas, who has written several books on the American Navy in the Pacific during WWII.

Whalen will place a memorial wreath at the portal of the monument on behalf of the city of New York.
