BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a former Buffalo jail attendant has pleaded guilty to violating the civil rights of an inmate who was beaten while handcuffed.
Prosecutors say 27-year-old Matthew Jaskula entered his plea Tuesday in federal court in Buffalo. Last May, Jaskula was accused of shoving a handcuffed prisoner face-first into a door and dragging him into a cell, and then leaving him in a restraint chair for nearly two hours with a broken nose and other facial injuries.
The incident was recorded on the cell block’s video cameras.
Jaskula is expected to face less than two years in prison when he’s sentenced in October.
His attorney, Paul Dell, says he’ll ask for no jail time. He says Jaskula did a difficult job that should be handled by trained police officers.
