ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - State officials say they are giving up on stocking shad population in the James River.

The Roanoke Times reports that this year will be the final year officials plan to stock the fish. Efforts at restoring the shad population have yielded little success in 25 years as the fish population remains at historic lows.

The American shad is sometimes called the “founding fish” because of its importance in early America.
