PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Police have arrested a man and charged him in the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old man near an affordable housing complex in Providence.

The attorney general’s office says a grand jury indicted Howard Watson Friday on charges of murder, discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence and possession of a firearm without a license. The 59-year-old pleaded not guilty Monday.

Watson has been charged with fatally shooting MacKenzie Irons on July 31. Authorities say Irons had been involved in an argument outside the Chad Brown housing complex when someone drew a gun.

Police say Irons was shot as he tried to run away. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
