DENVER (AP) - Colorado jails are making changes to their facilities in an attempt to curb suicides by inmates.

The Denver Post reports (https://dpo.st/2yauS9E ) Arapahoe County has reinforced their bunk beds with plexiglass.

Denver jails have brought in tear-resistant sheets and blankets and Jefferson County has replaced pencils with flexible pens.

The moves are intended to remove items that could be used in suicide attempts.

A previous report by The Denver Post found that 41 percent of the people that died in Colorado jails from Jan. 1, 2010 to July 8, 2016 died by suicide.

Arapahoe County Detention Services Bureau Chief Vince Line says 13 of their inmates attempted suicide last year. He says this year’s rate is on track to surpass that number.
