NEW YORK (AP) - The state’s highest court has struck down an effort to force the New York Police Department to make the disciplinary records of police officers public.

The New York Times reports the Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that the State Civil Rights Law allows the department to withhold certain misconduct records to protect the officers involved.

The New York Civil Liberties Union called the decision a “terrible setback.” They had filed a lawsuit six years ago when police were still stopping and frisking mostly minorities in high crime neighborhoods.

A State Supreme Court judge earlier ruled that police had to release redacted documents, but an appellate court overruled the lower court. Tuesday’s decision affirmed that decision.

The city’s largest police union hailed the decision as a welcome victory.
