CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - The U.S. government has concluded that a tiny plant found only in a small area of Wyoming does not need special protection under law.
The Fremont County rockcress is a high-elevation perennial herb with small, white flowers. It grows only in a very small area at the southern end of the Wind River Range.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Wednesday the plant doesn’t need protecting under the Endangered Species Act.
Agency officials say there are no immediate threats to the plant largely because the U.S. Bureau of Land Management has protected the plant’s habitat, which covers just 160 acres (65 hectares).
