ROMEROVILLE, N.M. (AP) - State police say two people are dead after a multi-vehicle pileup on Interstate 25 near Las Vegas.

Authorities said Tuesday they’re withholding the identities of the victims until they can notify relatives.

Police say at least 20 vehicles, including three semitrailers, were involved in the pileup near Romeroville. It started Monday evening when a vehicle headed north slid off the roadway and hit a divider in the median. A semitrailer then jackknifed trying to avoid the crash, and other vehicles piled up behind.

The National Weather Service says a combination of light snow and freezing fog and rain made roads slick in the area.

Police had shut down the interstate for hours while investigating.
