LAKELAND, FLA. – Catcher John Hicks grew up in the Richmond area of Goochland and played at the University of Virginia.
He is in spring training with the Detroit Tigers, a team that claimed him off waivers from the Minnesota Twins on April 23, 2016.
Hicks, 28, made his major league debut with Seattle in 2015 and then played in one game for the Tigers in 2016, spending most of the year at Triple-A Toledo of the International League.
Last year, he hit .265 in 60 games with the Tigers with six homers in 173 at bats.
Hicks started on Monday in a spring training home game against the Washington Nationals.
He struck out against Washington starter Edwin Jackson in the second, lined out in the fourth off Trevor Gott, and then hit a triple in the sixth against lefty Enny Romero, who has a 7.71 ERA this spring.
Hicks was 1-for-3 with the RBI against the Nationals and is hitting .259 this spring. He was drafted out of Virginia in the fourth round by Seattle in 2011.
Gott threw an impressive two innings with two strikeouts and has not allowed an earned run this spring.
