ENGLEWOOD, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey man who spent four years in jail before being acquitted of a double murder has filed suit accusing prosecutors of ignoring evidence and trying to wear him down to “extort a plea agreement.”
Authorities in Bergen County accused Michael Brady of Teaneck in 2013 of stabbing his girlfriend and using a plastic bag to smother her 5-year-old daughter because she saw her mother’s slaying. Jurors in Bergen County took less than two hours to acquit him in September 2017.
NJ.com reports that a federal civil rights lawsuit accuses prosecutors of ignoring evidence that Brady, a middle school janitor, wasn’t the killer and neglecting to test DNA evidence.
The county prosecutor’s office said officials don’t comment on ongoing litigation. The state attorney general’s office also declined comment.
