CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) - The governing body of a Rhode Island detention facility is facing criticism for not holding its monthly public meeting following the death of a detainee.
The director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island, Steven Brown, criticized the hiatus’ timing because it took place the same month a detainee died in the facility’s custody.
Gilbert Delestre, a 39-year-old man who was held at the Wyatt Detention Facility, died Sunday after almost three days at Rhode Island Hospital.
Delestre was in the U.S. Marshal’s Service’s custody.
A corporation spokesman says Delestre’s death did not impact the decision to not have an August meeting.
The Providence Journal reports that the last month in which the Central Falls Detention Facility Corporation didn’t hold a public meeting was February 2015.
