ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis authorities are investigating after an inmate was found dead in the jail known as the City Workhouse.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that a 35-year-old man held since July on a probation revocation order was found unresponsive between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Thursday. The man’s name has not been released.
Public Safety Director Jimmie Edwards says there was no indication of violence. A cause of death has not been determined.
Edwards says a drug sweep of the jail has been ordered as a precaution.
The 53-year-old jail has been the focus of a campaign to close it by people who have cited substandard conditions there. Officials say the facility is not inhumane and the allegations are out of date.
