STORRS, Conn. (AP) - An anonymous donor has given the University of Connecticut $3 million to fund research into the earth’s ecology and evolutionary biology.

The gift will be used to hire two endowed research positions, the school said Thursday.

UConn professor Eric Schultz, who teaches ecology and evolutionary biology, said the work, which involves studying and teaching about the earth’s heritage and biological diversity is important given the high rate of human-caused extinctions.

“This is completely unprecedented,” he said. “No department in the university has been granted two endowed chairs simultaneously like this. It represents a substantial and absolutely incredible opportunity for us.”

The school said the gift will help UConn President Thomas Katsouleas with his goal of doubling the school’s research enterprise over the next 10 years.
