BALSAM, N.C. (AP) - Landslides have closed portions of highways in western North Carolina.
Transportation officials say a slide on the westbound side of U.S. Route 74 on Sunday temporarily diverted traffic west of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Officials say trees, rocks and mud slid into the drainage ditch with trees crossing both lanes of traffic. Lanes began reopening midday Sunday.
That came two days after a landslide closed a stretch of Interstate 40 in Haywood County. News outlets report that officials say no one was injured, but several vehicles were damaged.
Department of Transportation spokesman David Uchiyama says officials aim to have one lane open in each direction by Friday. He says repairs there will take six to eight weeks.
