TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - Law enforcement agencies in northern Mississippi have joined together to fight human trafficking.

Officers and victim service providers gathered Tuesday in Tupelo to announce the Northeast Mississippi Human Trafficking Task Force.

The Center for Violence Prevention Executive Director Sandy Middleton says the task force has three goals. The group aims to raise awareness, plan response efforts and rescue victims. Middleton says it’s important for the public to look out for anything that seems suspicious and report it.

The Oxford Eagle reports the Center for Violence Prevention opened Mississippi’s first human trafficking shelter in 2017. “The Tower” in Jackson received 22 crisis calls between July 2018 and June of this year.
