NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - The mayor of New Haven’s budget proposal for 2019-2020 includes no tax increase and no layoffs.

The $556.5 million proposal represents a 1.75 percent increase over the current year’s budget after Democratic Mayor Toni Harp raised the tax rate by 11 percent. The New Haven Register reports taxes went up after anticipated state funding came up short.

The budget adds an estimated $9.6 million to this year’s budget, $4.5 million of which will be additional funding to the city’s two employee pension funds.

Acting Budget Director Michael Gormany says the budget is based on the proposed state aid level for New Haven as submitted by Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont.
