HAMBURG, N.Y. (AP) - A western New York town official says he’s hoping for a “gradual melt” of ice piles as tall as a house that formed along the Lake Erie shoreline after a wind storm last month.
WIVB says visitors are still making their way to Hamburg to take pictures. If they listen closely, they may detect the sound of falling ice.
A local resident, Leanne Powers, says the ice piles are “shrinking very quickly.” She says water hidden beneath the ice may pose a danger and visitors should be very careful.
The town’s emergency services manager, Sean Crotty, says the situation is being closely monitored.
Crotty thinks the ice piles will be around a while longer. But he doubts it will be an attraction “come the Fourth of July.”
