NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - On a day when a snowstorm slowed the morning commute, more than two dozen New Jersey Transit trains were late or cancelled, mostly due to crew shortages.

Most of the cancellations Monday were on the Morris and Essex Line. The Main/Bergen County and Pascack Valley lines also had multiple cancellations.

An NJ Transit spokeswoman says about 20 trains were cancelled due to manpower issues. Those cancellations, along with equipment issues, caused other trains to be late.

NJ Transit has faced an engineer shortage in recent years and has expanded its training program to make up for the shortfall. At least four classes are expected to graduate this year.

The shortage, combined with a spate of unexcused absences and required safety work, contributed to numerous train cancellations last summer.
