HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Interim Huntington Police Chief Ray Cornwell has been tapped to take on the role permanently, the city’s mayor said Tuesday.
Mayor Steve Williams appointed Cornwell to interim chief in December when the police department’s former leader became the city manager.
Cornwell is a 24-year veteran of the Huntington Police Department, first hired as a probationary officer in 1996 and rising through multiple positions.
“Any success I have achieved in my career is owed to the efforts of all of our officers,” he said in a news release.
As interim chief, Cornwell oversaw the department’s move to 12-hour shifts to have more officers on patrol.
