A treatment for the coronavirus is the only way to end our current crisis rapidly. President Trump asked for deployment of two safe, existing drugs, hydroxychloroquine and Remedesevir. Physicians have used them with good results in small studies, but the bureaucracy is stumbling all over itself regarding informing the public about them.

The experts want clinical trials that will take months. Both drugs have been in use for decades in hundreds of thousands of patients and have mechanisms of actions that further support their efficacy. They are the only weapons we have right now and must be promoted immediately.

The president should issue an executive order declaring that any safe drug which has shown efficacy in coronavirus patients must be immediately available to patients. The order should also declare that all antiviral drugs currently in clinical trials undergo an interim analysis, and if found to be safe and effective, they also must also be made available to patients.

A thousand patients are dying each day, as is our economy, and we are hiding in fear from this virus. Aggressive leadership that spearheads an attack on it is long overdue.
