MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A south Alabama police officer was charged with murder in a shooting that occurred while he was off duty, authorities said Tuesday.

Johnathan Murphy, 35, was arrested in the killing of Larry Taylor, 39, who was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds at an apartment building late Monday. Authorities didn’t release information about what might have prompted the gunfire.

Murphy is an officer with the city of Prichard, according to the Mobile Police Department. He shot and killed a motorist while on duty in 2017 but wasn’t charged and remained on the force, new outlets reported.

Court records weren’t available Tuesday to show whether Murphy had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.
