As senators ponder how they might vote — impeachment or acquittal of the president — folks are wondering why the Democratic House managers are challenging senators by calling them names and stating that voting for acquittal would mean aiding the president in a cover-up.

One might come to the conclusion that the Democrats don’t really want President Trump removed from office, which is why the Democratic House didn’t bother to do a thorough, legitimate impeachment. They accomplished what they wanted: The stigma of impeachment.

They certainty wouldn’t want to make Mr. Trump a martyr by removing him from office. They just wanted to blacken the eye of the president so their 2020 nominee would have a better chance of defeating him in November.

They gambled that their rhetoric would produce enough ire among Republicans that they would be pushed to vote against witnesses and removal. Keeping an impeached president in office creates doubt with voters about reelecting same-party senators.
