SALEM, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts man convicted of assault and statutory rape was sentenced to seven to nine years in state prison, prosecutors said.
Angel Mateo, 23, of Lawrence, was sentenced Monday for committing crimes involving four female victims, including a 13-year-old girl, The Eagle-Tribune reported.
Mateo has been held without bail since October 2016 after he was charged with attacking the 13-year-old as she walked to middle school. Prosecutors said Mateo took the girl to his home and raped her.
Mateo’s defense attorney, Jeffrey Sweeney, said in his opening statement that the girl’s story changed after she initially spoke to police.
Police found additional alleged victims after his arrest. Two women who testified said Mateo attacked them after they parked their cars. They both said he put them in a headlock and dragged them down the street.
Mateo was also sentenced to three years of probation after he is released from prison. He must submit to sex offender evaluation and treatment, wear a GPS monitor and have no contact with the victims and witnesses.
