WAUWATOSA, Wis. (AP) - A teenager who was fatally shot by an officer outside a suburban Milwaukee shopping mall last week fired first, Wauwatosa police said.

Police have released video of the officer-involved shooting that happened Feb. 2 outside Mayfair Mall. According to police, the 17-year-old was shot five times by a Wauwatosa police officer after he fired a shot and fled.

Family and friends have identified the teen as Alvin Cole, a senior at Milwaukee Vincent High School. Police were called to the mall by security for a disturbance involving about 10 people, one of them with a gun. Police said a 9 mm pistol, reported stolen in Milwaukee in October, was found at the scene.

Police say more than one officer told the teen to put the gun down before one of the officers returned fire. Police say they performed CPR on Cole, but he later died at the hospital.

Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry Weber said the attorney for Cole’s family met with the department on Friday, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

The Milwaukee Police Department, which is investigating the shooting, has declined to release the officer’s name citing the ongoing investigation. Wauwatosa police spokesman Capt. Brian Zalewski said the city’s police officers don’t wear body cameras
