JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the deaths of a mother and an infant girl over the weekend in New Jersey, prosecutors said.

Police and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to a Jersey City home at about 6 a.m. Saturday and found an unresponsive infant girl and a 41-year-old woman who needed assistance as well, the Hudson County prosecutor’s office said.

The infant was pronounced dead at the scene, prosecutors said. The woman was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday, prosecutors said. The names of mother and infant weren’t immediately released.

The cause and manner of death in both cases are pending the findings of the regional medical examiner’s office. Prosecutors and Jersey City police are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call investigators.

NJ.com reports that the home had been cited for multiple health and housing code violations last summer.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said on Twitter “We were here at this same house last year with violations. … It’s hard not to dwell on issues like this and reflect where we could all do better.”
