SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - State and federal authorities in Vermont are searching for separate swimmers who disappeared in Lake Champlain at about the same time, but miles apart.

Recovery operations have begun for one swimmer, and the second is presumed dead.

Just before 6 p.m. Tuesday, South Burlington officials were notified that one male was missing off Red Rocks Park.

There was a group of six people on a boat, and four of them needed to be rescued. One of the people who was rescued was hospitalized.

South Burlington Fire Chief Terry Francis says the missing male, whose identity was not released, was not wearing a life jacket.

Just after 6 p.m. Tuesday, rescue crews were called to the Alburgh Dunes State Park after receiving a report of a man who dove into the water from a boat and did not resurface.

Vermont State Police say the missing swimmer in Alburgh is presumed dead. Search and recovery operations are due to resume Wednesday.
