ORRUM, N.C. (AP) - Two women were found fatally shot at a North Carolina cemetery, and the property owner was also found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said Sunday.

The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that deputies began investigating the cemetery owner, 77-year-old Robert “Sonny” Moore of Orrum, after a man reported that Moore had shot him Saturday night.

Investigators had obtained a warrant for Moore and were attempting to apprehend him when the sheriff’s office received a 911 call about two women found dead at the White Oak Island Private Cemetery and Wildlife. The cemetery, which Moore owned, is used as a community gathering place, according to the news release.

Deputies arrived and found Laura Speights, 63, of Orrum and Anna Faulk, 46, of Fairmont dead. Deputies then searched Moore’s property and found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The department said Moore, Speights, Faulk and other individuals had been at the cemetery recently for a fish fry.

The 48-year-old man who was shot was taken to a hospital and expected to survive, the sheriff’s office said.

An investigation is ongoing.
