HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (AP) - A federal inmate in North Carolina has died from injuries sustained in a fight with at least one fellow prisoner, authorities confirmed.
A verbal altercation between Maurice Antoine King, of Durham, and at least one other inmate escalated late Wednesday at the Orange County Detention Center, an county sheriff’s spokeswoman said in a statement.
The 35-year-old inmate was taken to a hospital following the fight and was pronounced dead, the statement said. The other inmates involved were not immediately identified.
Sheriff’s officials didn’t comment on the circumstances leading to the fight or the nature of King’s injuries.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office was continuing to investigate.
