WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A Delaware man shot by police after he allegedly rammed his car into a cruiser and sped toward officers has been charged with attempted murder.
Orrin Daniels, 51, was accused of trying to escape from authorities responding to a domestic dispute. He eventually hit multiple cars and accelerated over a sidewalk where two Wilmington officers were standing, according to the department. Officers repeatedly ordered Daniels to stop driving before they opened fire, police told news outlets.
Daniels was in stable condition after last Thursday’s confrontation, WPVI-TV reported. He was charged the next day with multiple counts of attempted murder as well as reckless endangering, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting arrest with force or violence and reckless driving.
Richard Smith, president of the NAACP Delaware State Conference of Branches, disputed Wilmington police’s account in an interview with The Delaware News Journal on Friday. He said some witnesses questioned whether Daniels really tried to run the officers over.
The officers involved weren’t injured and have since been placed on administrative leave, the newspaper said.
