A pair of U.S. military advisers died Sunday in a firefight against ISIS forces in a mountainous area in north central Iraq, according to officials from Operation Inherent Resolve.

Pentagon officials have not identified the two American service members. Their names were withheld pending notification of their next-of-kin.

According to the initial reports, they were accompanying Iraqi Security Forces who were battling Islamic State fighters held up in a terrorist stronghold in the mountains. They were killed during the battle, officials said.

The U.S. maintains some 5,200 troops in Iraq on a mission to assist and provide training to Iraqi security forces in the fight against the Islamic State group.

There was no immediate comment from Iraqi officials.
