There will be no magic pill, no vaccine. Instead, the coronavirus will join the list of illnesses with which the human population lives. If you want to start to decipher why Italy is worse than Sweden, or New York is worse than Florida or even Georgia, there is ample associative evidence to mull. But don’t get your hopes up that it will pop up in the mainstream media. It involves no drugs and no financial models.

Italy’s population has one of the lowest vitamin D levels in Europe, and Italy has the worst air pollution on the continent. They also have high rates of metabolic ill health. You do not need to be a scientist to guess where this places immune-system health. If you think it is all about age, compare New York with Florida. The former was a disaster but still could not max out its intensive care units. The New York politicians did some really stupid things, not the least of which was mandating that nursing homes take infected patients, but it could be that the difference in death rates between New York and Florida is just due to sun exposure.

Many factors affect human immune systems and resistance to viral infection. The longer you stay shut in and ignore your metabolic health, the worse you are going to fair when this virus returns in the fall, and you can count on it.
