Democratic nominee Joseph R. Biden on Thursday said he would force China to “play by the rules” if he is elected president.

During Thursday’s final presidential debate in Nashville, Tennessee, the former vice president insisted that he would “make China abide by international rules” and accused his Republican rival, President Trump, of taking a relaxed approach to China’s government.

Mr. Biden referenced an air identification zone set up in the East China Sea — which he mistakenly referred to as the South China Sea — by Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Obama administration.

“I said we’re going to fly through them,” he said.

“We just flew B-52 bombers through them. … They have to play by the rules.”
