RANGELEY, Maine (AP) - Police are searching in western Maine for a convicted sex offender who skipped a meeting with his probation officer and another man who’s on bail on a sexual assault charge.

Shawn Batchelder, who served time for rape and was last seen in Augusta on Sept. 12, is believed to be travelling with Steven Petersen, who’s currently on bail in York County, officials said.

The search began Thursday when police received a tip that the men may have been dropped off near the Appalachian Trail in the Byron area.

On Friday, Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said the men are believed to be in the area known as the “Height of the Land.”

Warrants have been issued for both men. Deputies, state police, Maine game wardens, and U.S. Border Patrol are all involved in the search.
