ASHBURN — Washington activated guard Brandon Scherff and defensive tackle Daron Payne off the COVID-19 reserve list Thursday — two major additions to the roster as the team gets closer to full strength in training camp.

Scherff and Payne went on the reserve list last week, but only ended up missing six and five days, respectively. Unvaccinated players who are deemed close contacts to someone who caught the virus must miss at least five days before being cleared to return.

Washington’s reserve list is now down to just two players — wide receiver Curtis Samuel and tackle David Sharpe — after having as many as seven players on it earlier in camp.

Over the past week, the team’s vaccination rate has continued to climb, going from 60% as of last week to 85%. ESPN reported late Wednesday that the team had crossed the 85% threshold of players who have at least one dose of the vaccine.
