I am trying to understand why calling COVID-19 the Wuhan virus or the China virus is now considered racist, but noting that more virulent versions of the virus coming from the United Kingdom, Brazil and South Africa are spreading across the U.S. is perfectly OK. I guess these other strains are like the Spanish Influenza or Ebola.

If I recall correctly, in early 2020 CNN and MSNBC were using the term Wuhan virus, but they quickly stopped when President Trump started using it. There were allegations that Chinese people in the U.S. were being targeted for abuse. I never saw much reported on whether there was a spike in such violence following the use of the term, and if there was, what race was committing the hate crimes.
