Last April our investigators first uncovered that National Institutes of Health funding was secretly being funneled by Peter Daszak and his non-profit EcoHealth Alliance to dangerous coronavirus experiments on bats and other animals at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). This is the perilous partnership that many experts believe caused the COVID-19 pandemic, and that past and current administrations want investigated (“White House warns WHO not to be influenced by China on virus origin probe,” Web, Feb. 13).

The Trump administration halted this specific pass-through money last year after our expose, but WIV is still eligible for more NIH funding until 2024. Mr. Daszak’s EcoHealth has also received over $100 million in tax funding, including millions in new federal grants from NIH and the Pentagon as recently as September 2020, as well as $750,000 in bailout funds due to a global pandemic it may have helped cause.

Shipping U.S. tax dollars to a notorious Chinese Communist Party-run lab that’s trying to make pandemic-causing coronaviruses deadlier — and bankrolling their U.S. collaborator, which has been obstructing an investigation — is a recipe for disaster.

Congress must defund WIV and EcoHealth now and independently probe whether their taxpayer-funded coronavirus experiments led to the COVID-19 outbreak.
