The racist mass murderer in Buffalo, New York, was inspired by replacement theory — but that is hardly mainstream Republican Party policy, as so many commentators are implying (“The law, racism and promoting America at its worst,” Web, May 18). Scapegoating Republicans for murderous, racist events is an ideological exigency for Democrats as the midterm elections loom.

It is noteworthy that they only specify white racists who kill Blacks as being inspired by political beliefs and policies. They are keen to keep silent when Black racists murder whites, as has happened in Wisconsin and New York City recently, lest Democratic beliefs about white supremacy and privilege be closely scrutinized.

There are many Black intellectuals who find the idea that white supremacy is the root of minority problems simplistic in the extreme; among them are Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Glenn Loury and Shelby Steele.
