OPINION:
Former Vice President Mike Pence is a strange bird (“Lost in space: Pence struggles to find political home in Trump-dominated 2024 race,” web, July 24).
He is not a glittering peacock strutting in and about the Capitol like a protean politician, but a solid, stolid and serious official, seemingly humorless and clearly out of touch with our bicoastal culture.
Mr. Pence is a man of firm Midwestern stock who doesn’t suffer fools gladly — but would never intentionally insult them.
His dance for four years with former President Donald Trump, a popinjay often left naked in bright media criticism, was a pairing of electoral convenience only. It was never one based on common standards and values.
The idea that Mr. Pence betrayed our republic on Jan. 6, 2021, by not betraying our Constitution does not render him a constitutional illiterate or a coward. But it does help explain his lack of Republican support.
