OPINION:
It appears that some biological men who identify as women are calling the WNBA’s bluff by expressing interest in joining the league.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, has responded by saying the issue is nuanced and complicated (“WNBA commissioner says league will continue discussing issue of transgender participation,” Web, Aug. 8). She hasn’t explained what those nuances are, but she clearly finds herself in an uncomfortable position.
The issue seems straightforward: Either biological males who identify as women are eligible to play in the WNBA or they are not. Before long, the league will likely have to provide a clear answer rather than rely on vague language.
But if biological males are to be eligible, what standards will determine who qualifies? Will there be height or weight limits? Testosterone thresholds? Other physical criteria? Whatever the standard, the league will have to explain why it is fair and consistent.
The WNBA appears to have backed itself into a corner. The clearest way out is to adopt a transparent policy that can be defended on its merits, whatever that policy may be, and return the focus to basketball.
Now that’s nuance.
