Bill Gertz has joined several other defense and security analysts pointing out in op-eds the need for President Trump to complete Operation Epic Fury (“Make Iran another failed Middle East state,” Web Aug. 24).

Mr. Gertz brings the considerable experience of over 40 years as a news correspondent specializing in national security affairs to the topic and he deserves to be given attention.

He points out that the original objective of Epic Fury was to force Iran into unconditional surrender, and it is now well beyond the time that more action should be taken to bring this to fruition.

There is no doubt that Iran — either directly or through well-funded proxies — has been responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans and allies since 1979, and it is past time this is brought to a permanent halt.

The ideal solution would be the creation of such a power vacuum within Iran that a new regime could take power. It has, however, become clear that this will not occur without further weakening of the present ruling party.

Reluctantly, we have to conclude that sanctions and negotiations will no longer reach this required objective.

The only solution remaining now is to complete the work of Epic Fury, bring our magnificent loyal troops home and celebrate a long-awaited victory.
