Iran on Monday executed two men accused of spying for Israel, the latest in a wave of government-ordered hangings since the start of the U.S.-Israeli joint air campaign against Tehran.
The state-owned Mehr News Agency identified the men as Omid Behzad and Pouria Safvat.
Mr. Behzad was accused of sending the coordinates of Iranian law enforcement and security centers to Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency, through the Telegram social messaging network. Mr. Safvat reportedly sent images and information about “critical sites” to the London-based Iran International television channel, which the Iranian government said is linked to Mossad.
“Some of the locations he provided were subsequently bombed,” Mehr News said. “He also filmed and transmitted video of air defense systems from high rooftops during the 12-day war.”
Both men were arrested by the intelligence arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and convicted on charges of “espionage and intelligence cooperation with the Israeli regime.” The Iranian Supreme Court reviewed the sentences before they were carried out, Mehr News said Monday.
According to the Norway-based advocacy group Iran Human Rights, at least 12 people have been executed in Iran on espionage charges, along with 28 protesters and 13 political prisoners affiliated with banned opposition groups.
