OPINION:
Comparing the Democratic Socialists of America to the Tea Parties of the 2010s is like comparing a Nuremberg rally to a Fourth of July party.
Both started as grassroots, anti-establishment movements. That’s where the similarities begin and end.
The Tea Parties wanted to make the Republican Party more consistently conservative. They wanted the GOP to return to the policies of President Ronald Regan.
The DSA wants to take the Democratic Party to a place where it has never been before — to full-blown statism, which would have shocked Democrats of the past, such as Presidents Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson and John F. Kennedy.
The Tea Parties wanted less government and lower taxes. The DSA wants super-sized government and taxes through the ceiling. Look at what Mayor Zohran Mamdani, its shining light, wants to do in New York City – government grocery stores, free bus service and day care, financed by every revenue-raising scheme imaginable.
The Tea Parties wanted to return to the principles of the Founding Fathers – limited government restrained by a balance of powers. The DSA wants to return to the principles of its Founding Fathers – Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin.
The DSA’s just-adopted platform calls for abolishing the Senate and turning the president and the Supreme Court into creatures of a unicameral legislature, which will function as the U.S. equivalent of the old Soviet Politburo.
The socialists on steroids also want to abolish borders, police, prisons and national defense, which will result in the end of America as a sovereign state.
They would flood the country with millions of immigrants who would immediately be given the right to vote in our elections, thus cementing socialist power forever. Can re-education camps and secret police be far behind?
Taxpayers will become slaves of the newcomers, who will be given every benefit the socialists can dream up. It is a prescription for national suicide.
Those who attended Tea Party events were true patriots. They loved what made America great. The DSA hates our history and heritage. It believes America was built on slavery and maintained by oppression and exploitation.
Internet personality Hasan Piker, its Robespierre, has gone so far as to charge that America deserved 9/11. Wisconsin DSA gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong says we should “cancel Thanksgiving.”
The Tea Parties were about national renewal. The DSA is about the end of America as we know it.
