A man is in police custody after entering a restricted area at NBC headquarters before lunging and yelling a slur at “Today” anchor Craig Melvin.
The New York City Police Department said in a statement that at 9:19 a.m. Thursday, it was reported to officers that there was a disorderly person inside 30 Rockefeller Center. … Officers responded and placed an unidentified individual into custody. There were no injuries reported. The investigation remains ongoing,” according to Variety.
Unnamed police sources told TMZ that the man arrested had sneaked backstage past security using a stairwell, and that he was looking for weatherman and anchor Al Roker.
The man, who is White and was unarmed, was unable to find Mr. Roker. He found Mr. Melvin, yelled the N-word and lunged at him, police sources told TMZ.
Staff and security then detained the man until police arrived, according to the New York Post.
The incident was not captured on air, and both Mr. Roker and Mr. Melvin appeared on “Today” about 15 minutes after the incident without making mention of it, according to New York’s Daily News.
