The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is planning to put screen doors along platforms at Metrorail stations on the Red Line.
The doors will stand 5 feet, 6 inches, Metro said in a report to be presented at its Thursday board meeting.
Installing the doors will require the removal of existing granite platform edges and the round lights embedded in them. In their place will be concrete edges capable of supporting the doors and screens across the length of the platforms, per the report.
Metro is moving forward with the screen door plan due to the number of people who have trespassed onto the train tracks across the Metrorail system.
As of July 9, 84 trespassers were recorded this year, with five suffering injuries and 10 dying as a result, according to the report. By comparison, there were 123 trespassers for both 2025 and 2024, with eight deaths in 2025 and six in 2024.
Metro officials said the earliest that the barriers and doors will be completed is sometime in 2028, according to Washington’s WTOP-FM.
