President Trump announced that a deal to end the war in Iran is scheduled to be signed Sunday, with the Strait of Hormuz opening right away.
“The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN TO ALL,” he posted Saturday on Truth Social.
“We look forward to working with Iran, and the entire Middle East, long into the future. Hopefully, this process will all work out quickly, easily, and smoothly,” he added. “If it doesn’t, we have the ultimate alternative, hopefully never to be used again!”
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Saturday morning that a peace deal is “likely expected” to be finalized in the next 24 hours, with his country preparing for the electronic signing and, next week, technical-level talks.
“We are closer to a peace deal than ever before,” he wrote on social media. “We would like to thank United States of America and Islamic Republic of Iran for their ongoing commitment during the negotiations, and we extend our sincere appreciation to our brothers in the region for their support. We are confident that this historic peace deal will form a strong foundation for lasting peace.”
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, however, gave a different timeline.
“We will have to wait and see about the exact date of the signing of the memorandum of understanding, although it will not be tomorrow,” state media reported him saying. “The possibility of this happening in the coming days cannot be ruled out. However, due to the hesitation of the other side, we must be cautious in making any comments about this process.”
The war started Feb. 28, when the U.S. and Israel bombed Iran to dismantle the Islamic republic’s military infrastructure and ensure Tehran abandons its nuclear weapons program.
In his announcement, Mr. Trump blamed former President Barack Obama’s previous deal with Iran.
“Barack Hussein Obama’s Deal with Iran, the [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action], was an easy, beautiful, smooth road to a Nuclear Weapon, which Iran would have had six years ago, and would have used long before now,” Mr. Trump said on social media. “My Agreement with Iran is the exact opposite, A WALL TO NO NUCLEAR WEAPON! In fact, they no longer want a Nuclear Weapon, nor will they have one, either through purchase, development, or any other form of procurement.”
He added that “at the appropriate time, when all is calm, we will go in and get the Nuclear Dust, buried deep under the powerful sunken granite mountains, thanks to our beautiful B-2 Bombers and their brilliant pilots, and downblend and destroy it, whether in Iran, or the United States.”
